Any idea what these are?

These were taken when we were in Cherating. The girls wanted to explore the resort & came across these tiny little balls. Only Balqis was the only one fascinated however. Her sisters were busy attempting to climb up a hanging ladder. Hubby was packing things up to check out, in the room (he travels a lot so, an expert in packing & repacking ) & I was baby-sitting with a camera in my hands... It was not of course a beautiful sight. Monitoring Balqis is one thing, shouting out of my lungs for the other two girls not to climb up too high is another. Still I have the time to play with my precious baby Canon .

Thanks so much for this great article;this is the words that keeps me going through the day. I have been searching around for this site after asked to visit them from a buddy and was thrilled when I found it after searching for awhile. Being a demanding blogger, I’m dazzled to see others taking initivative and contributing to the community. I just wanted to comment to show my appreciation for your work as it’s very energizing, and many bloggers do not get credit they deserve. I am sure I’ll visit again and will send some of my friends.

I have been playing around with Photoshop. Very impressive, I would say. Finally, I've got a hold of this software & it is definitely worth it. I used different approach in each pic.... Which do you prefer?

My subject is Balqis again. Of course..... in her best of mood!

Trying to ignore my camera...

Trying to scare me off!

Eyes closed, refused to look at my camera again...

Peek...

A..boo!

A monkey pose...

At last a smile from Balqis!!

Boogey, u visited his long abandoned FP before. You even dropped a comment on wanting to climb Mount Kinabalu. It's really from his FP that I got the link to yours & frm yours to others... Thu 19-Apr-2007 15:27

Balqis again...

Balqis was warded in SYMC last week. She was whizzing & coughing non stop. As expected, it was lung infection. She is ok now, not to worry.

I stayed with her in the hospital & guess what? Hubby went home to pack up my things which he included my dslr!

These are some shots I took in the playroom. What do you think?

hope balqis gets well very soon - having children in hospital is a big worry.
photography wise, your shots are improving. I'm interested reading Rafiez's comments re: flash - flash photography is my current interest & reading his comments I learnt something new

picture number 1 - there's something new you tried with that picture: sharpening? sharpening the eyes? anyway, good effort. I think it could be improved if you had chosen a cooler white balance on the camera as i see there is an orange/magenta colour cast. Colour correction in photoshop could also fix this. Also, there's uneven lighting where there is a light fall off on the left side of the frame.

Picture number 3 certainly could do with levels adjustment in photoshop. As it is, it looks slightly "muddy", as if there's a grey film coating the picture. Photoshop & photoshop skills are a must in photography - 100%. I like the last picture.

Rafiez,
Tx for the tips ... esp the compliment! Talented....!(nobody ever used this adj before on me)

Arrembawi,
A ah... kat hospital. Dah sihat dah pun. Tx.

mynn,
Balqis is doing great now. Tx for your concern. Well... I edited only the 1st & the last pic. Maybe overdid it with the 1st pic. As for the last pic, it'd turn out better if were to have my 430EX with me at that moment & point it to the ceiling. The reflection of the TTL on the subject sort of spoils the shot kan?

Amirah Balqis

This is my youngest girl. She is only 2 but see how she can really pose. Very natural responding to a familiar lense right in front of her... For those curious, she is snacking a dried mango slice but by the look of it, it is way from dry.

I hope I'm applying the things I've learned from the good fellows here in FP. This portrait, taken with 1/20, 5.6, 37mm with built-in flash. I know that it'd turn a lot better if I were to use my 430EX. First picture, edited but the background is rather too dark (my naive opinion..) With the second picture, I brightened it up to distinguish the blurred background. And the third is the original. Of all 3, I prefer the 1st picture. What say you?

the hue in the original is better. i would reduce the gamut a bit through levelling. hehe... actually i know nuts about PS. Mon 2-Apr-2007 12:30

I prefer the original. And yes, I have to agree with mynn. The nurse he shot is really hot. Alahai! Sebab lens ke, sebab Canon ke, sebab photoshop ke, sebab flash ke tapi memang cun. Sat 7-Apr-2007 15:09

Ice Skating

Both my elder girls, Yasmin & Wardah are students of Skating Academy, Pyramid Ice. Being a professional mother as I am, besides attending to their needs, chauffeuring them around is also part of my job. Bored of reading newspaper, novels and even magazines while waiting for them, last 2 weeks I brought along a toy to play with. My C350D. I took the opportunity to capture movements. It is so obvious (based from the shots) that I need lots to learn.

Yasmin & Wardah performing lunges. Dragging one foot behind & skating with the other foot in front.

Wardah & her spiral. She has to practise more. Her leg should be lifted higher than that. And she can only do spiral with left leg up.

My attept capturing a fast movement. Well... thanks to Wardah for her lack of practice. Her slow spin was easier for me to shoot.

Shooting Yasmin's photos was quite a challenge. She was too fast for me. Furthermore, this girl of mine is not friendly to cameras... Unlike her sister who always surrenders wholeheartedly to my shots.

Here is Yasmin... doing forward crossover

So? What do you think? Need feedbacks...

these kids are fabulous. nampak jelas muda2 lagi dah berbakat. Sun 25-Mar-2007 10:24

quite a nice set of photos - what i like about them is that your daughters look relatively sharp to some of the other people blurred by motion. I also like that in some of your photos the head is sharp while some of the limb extremities are blurred by motion. the neon lit background is also interesting & colourful. i'm learning as well but i suggest:
1. framing & composition: try to place your subjects to 1/3rd of the frame instead of dead centre. I think i'd make a more dynamic image.
2. try zooming in as close as you can so that your daughters really fill the frame, (for example, let them fill at least 1/4th of the frame) - you'd be surprised by the impact this will create.
3. eye contact looks excellent in photos, try calling out to them and engage them in coversation then take the shot mid sentence (or something). lastly,
4. taking photos of kids, it's good to kneel to their level - try pointing your lens either at eye, shoulder or waist levels for different effects/ impact. good luck trying!

Red, thanks... just pursuing things that they are interested in. You might have the talent too, you never know...

Mynn, I own only the body of C350D, the 18-55mm (comes with the kit) & 430EX. No fancy lense. I had to be quite closed to my subjects & I didn't dare shooting in the rink. Will definitely give your tips a try. Tx. Another thing... I haven't gotten photoshop. Is it very good in editing? I use what comes with the kit - ZoomBrowser EX

Meet My Princesses

This was taken in our car on the way to our recent holiday in Cherating. You'll be seeing them quite often, that's for sure. My lifelong models . I love this shot. Definitely that is a mother's opinion not a photographer's!

From left: Yasmin, Wardah & Balqis

They'll make great models alright. Good shot. Mon 19-Mar-2007 12:10

same here, i use my family and friends as models for my pictures - unfortunately i have yet to know any real ones.

are you good with photoshop as well?

a tip for portraits is: zoom in as much as you can to take portraits (if i use a 18-55mm I will zoom to 55mm, now I use 105mm) . also use smaller apertures. it'll reduce distortion and blur the background, making for a flattering image.

also, light from the side (and put a white paper reflector on the opposite side).

How to upload banner or tag or whatever they call it to the top of the FP? On earth, you can learn those stuffs from the Fotopages tips and tricks section. Go to the cummunity button, click it and then click on the FP tricks and tips. Hope it's helpful enough. Tue 20-Mar-2007 23:48

Bubbles Fun

View all 10 photos...

You know how grandparents are towards their grandkids... This bubble gun is a little gift from my parents to little Balqis. From her expression, I'm pretty sure that she was really having jolly fun with the new toy. But did my shots show that?

Wardah, thanks for helping mama monitoring Balqis. Yasmin was not around. She accompanied my father to the driving range.

May I suggest you upload gambar ni in a larger format? Mon 19-Mar-2007 12:08

My First Entry

View all 6 photos...
I always have the passion in photography. Recently having purchased a new camera, I grab the opportunity to widen this long lost hobby of mine. Here are some of the photos I took while waiting for my girls' swimming lesson in Sunway.

Yup, ur the first. I took these photos after only a few days owning my C350D. Used auto macro . My first time ever using a dslr. Masa tu manual pun belum khatam baca... Tue 20-Mar-2007 04:44

cayalah, another canon dslr user we're the minority in malaysia it seems.

always happy when there's a new addition to the fotopages family. i always feel silly commenting on others' photos as i don't take great ones and i'm still learning. But, if i may humbly say - great subject and try variations of the same picture as in, instead of taking a bunch of flowers try getting really close (as close as your lens would allow) and isolate just one or three (some people say odd numbers make more attractive photos).

ja, welcome to fotopages and it's always wonderful to have someone looking at the world through the macro lens.
